And by that I mean the whole stupid, foolhardy concept. I’ve said before that if you really believe there’s a horde of attractive women faking interest in nerdy things just to get your attention, you have a massive case of unwarranted self-importance, and I still believe that. I also believe you’re incredible insecure, and threatened by some ‘enemy’ who is no such thing.

The world of comic books, sci-fi, videogames, all these things, is no longer a boy’s club with a “NO GIRLS ALLOWED” banner hanging on the door, and it never should have been (indeed, I suspect it never really WAS but for this very idea - girls aren’t REAL nerds, especially attractive ones! And then the internet came up and holy shit look, women came out in droves to discuss their interest in these things, going back to the 1980s and earlier like the rest of us). If you insist somehow that it should be, that you should act as some kind of gatekeeper - he is a real nerd, she is not - then quite frankly you are just one of the saddest specimens we have to offer. Many of us grew up being picked on for having a non-mainstream interest, and now that this interest is spreading you attack and snarl and demean and exclude instead of actually being happy that you have new people to share these wonderful interests with.

You complain about games being rehashes, comic book reboots that are just retreads, but actively keep out the new blood and perspectives that could actually offer something you haven’t seen or considered before.

You demean women who cosplay as attention seekers in skimpy outfits, ignoring that they didn’t create those outfits, WE did.

Who cares if someone’s exposure and love for The Avengers came from the movie, and not the comics first?

Who cares if someone plays Angry Birds more than Dark Souls? What, you never fucking played Tetris? Don’t give me that non-game crap.

Oh no, she watches Thor because he’s tall blonde and built like a brick shithouse and isn’t afraid to comment that the guy’s a stud and so’s his brother? Yeah, because you read Tarot: Witch of the Rose for the riveting storytelling and characterization, right?

Oh no, someone’s writing fanfic about Tony Stark and Steve Rogers buttfucking! What a demeaning thing to do to the characters, you say as browsing the pictures I’ve been hired to draw of the women of X-Men having a lesbian orgy.

At the core of it all, for some insane reason, you are so threatened by the presence of women in your interests that you insult, you cajole, you harrass, and you embarrass the rest of us who are just happy to share. You slam women who are attractive and cosplay as NOT REAL NERDS, THEY’RE PREYING ON US POOR WIDDLE MENZ! And when they’re not as attractive as you’d like, you slam them for not meeting your standards. Or you slam them for daring not to give you the time of day when you grope and harass and hit on them. And if you look like me while doing it, that’s even more hilariously hypocritical and out of touch with reality. She’s not there for YOU, bro.

You are not the center of the universe, you never were and you never SHOULD be. It’s time to share your toys, guys. It’s time to be more mature. It’s time to drop the entitled attitude that insists our standards and our standards alone should be met. You do not hold the keys to the kingdom, for the kingdom has no lock.

My friend Kat - a geek with a cool job making awesome videogames like NFS The Run and mad cosplay skills - said something on Twitter earlier that summed the whole Fake Geek Girl BS up perfectly;

“That’s just it- “fake geek girls” DO NOT EXIST. There are only WOMEN WITH VARYING LEVELS OF INTEREST IN DIFFERENT HOBBIES.”

Many of the women cosplaying at these conventions probably know more about the current state of comics than I do, but I’ll never be asked to prove my nerd cred if I roll up in a Superman tee - and I haven’t bought an issue since the New 52 launched.

Fucking afford them the same courtesy. Don’t be a douchebag.

Also noting, seen all of this from firsthand experience:

The Star Trek fandom and most Star Trek cons are just chock-full of dudes who will readily come up to women and accuse them of not being REAL Trekkies, quizzing them on their pseudo science, insisting Janeway is the worst Captain because she’s female and pointing out inaccuracies in their cosplays. It’s like most older and male Trekkies have completely forgot that the Star Trek fandom in the 60s, one of the founding ‘fathers’ of geekdom was basically initiated and kept going by women. It was largely the petitioning on the part of the female fandom that brought Star Trek back to air.

I used to walk around in total fear at comic/sci fi cons as a girl because I didn’t know EVERYTHING about the media that I like and I KNEW some dude would pounce eventually and get angry with me for not knowing like. The precise amount of dilithium necessary for a warp core’s functioning or something. Because it’s happened to me, tons of times, to the point where I’d get anxiety about not knowing everything in a geekdom and would often conceal my like of a thing around guys so they wouldn’t criticize me.

Oh god and I bolded that part that is really really true. Oh my god so true. How many times have guys screeched at me for drawing either the subtlest homosexuality between two male comic characters, and then called me ‘too prude’ and ‘too easily offended’ after I say I feel uncomfortable after strolling through an entire artist alley of artists drawing SUPERHERO GIRLS WITH BIG BOOBIES IN SKIMPY OUTFITS IN SUGGESTIVE POSES!!

So many times I’ve walked into comic stores and got weird looks because apparently since I look asian I can’t possible have an interest in reading Marvel/DC comic. I’ve actually had a couple dudes, on separate occasions, telling me where the manga section is because apparently since I look somewhat asian and since I am of opposite gender, reading Marvel and DC is strictly off limits.

You know, I actually forget these guys exist a lot. I mean, ever since I was a kid, I’ve had people—boys, men, women, girls—telling me I couldn’t do stuff like use computers, play video games, or like Star Trek, because I’m a girl. (They were a little weirded out by my overt crush on Xena, too.) But I also had my mom in my life. My mom who read Mavel comics in the 60s and also watched the original Star Trek on first air. I was raised on Star Trek: TNG in the late 80s and early 90s thanks to her. <3 But I just didn’t meet other geeks period, male or female. I didn’t know there was “geek culture.” It was just something me and my mom liked because it was good. We were a small island of geekdom.

But now that I think about it, I remember this guy I worked with. In the lunchroom, he could always be overheard talking excitedly about geek things—the newest comics to come out, what was being made into a movie, etc. I thought, “Wow, a fellow geek to have a conversation with!” and tried to join in. He was surprisingly resistant to this, and ignored me the first couple of times I spoke, then he was short with me. I wondered if he was just, you know, an incredibly rude person who didn’t like me for some reason? But I didn’t understand why he was hostile. One time I did manage to draw him out in conversation. I wondered if his nerdiness extended to anime, so I brought up my then main fandom, a popular anime series, and he made some comment about how the female protagonist of that series dies in the end. I was flabbergasted, and informed him that firstly, it had not ended, and secondly, the female protagonist was very much alive! He accused me of watching the Adult Swim version and being behind the Japanese version. I said that I’d watched the entire series fansubbed, and had no idea what the American airing of the dub was up to, but I read scanlations of the manga that were released weekly, a day or two after they were printed in Japan. I’d read the most recent thing off the creator’s pen that week, and the story was not finished, and the protagonist was still alive. He got all dismissive about the quality/worthwhileness of anime/manga in general. I later asked a much nicer geeky guy at that workplace why the aforementioned geek didn’t like me. He said that the aforementioned geek had said I was “really combative” or argumentative or aggressive or something like that.

Around that point, I decided aforementioned geek was just an asshole, and avoided him. This was hard, because he was really extroverted, and talked a lot, loudly, often to my geeky, male, non-asshole friends. I did see him talking to women sometimes too, but he seemed to prefer getting to explain something he knew all about to them to having them actually able to contribute to the discussion.

He wasn’t the majority, though. And I think the behavior of men like that pisses off the other guys, who would like to have conversations with the geek girls because they say interesting things. My friends were generally too shy and non-confrontational to say a thing like that to his face, though. It’s nice to see the OP doing it. Sometimes these assholes need to hear it from one of their guy friends.
